This is a jewel case made of tortoise shell and ivory who mounts a more than Museum Quality cameo carved on ivory depicting flowers and fruits on its lid. This is a real rarest find. The tortoise shell is very thick and this is something os rarest because usually we can find objects covered with a very thin strata of tortoise shell, in this case the tortoise shell is about 3mm thick, just like the ivory bars that decorate the case. The inside of the case is made of wood and the outer bottom is covered with green felt. The most wonderful thing who makes this case unique is the ivory cameo on the lid. The carving of the cameo is three-dimensional and it is just like a bas relief. The large roses in the center are amazingly carved, The abundance of details is amazing and the carving is something which leaves you speechless. Look at how the roses are carved, really incredible. There are also many forget-me-nots superbly carved. Every thing is intricately and amazingly carved, flowers and leaves make this carving a true sculpture. Another thing who makes me amazed is the carving of the thorns on the stem's roses, they are just real. How they could make a such work of art? Dieppe, in France, was the most famous place for the working and carving of ivory and the carver who made this cameo was, with no doubt, a great master. Look at all the wonderful pictures of this cameo and you can see the real art. All the Victorian spirit is in this cameo. Roses and forget me not's were one of the symbols of the romantic Victorian era. This is a true amazing piece and, as I said above, finding a piece like this in this perfect conditions, is almost a miracle, I'm amazed that it survived almost intact since it was so delicate. This is a real great find and a must have for any collector.
