This is another work of art depicting Venus on her chariot drawn by doves and companied by Aurora and putti. This is not a cameo, it is an intaglio. Differently from a cameo an intaglio is a type of carving where the design is cut into the flat background of a stone. The carver made a great artwork as this piece is a fabulous scene never seen before now, it is after a work of Pierre Paul Prud'hon, a French painter (Cluny April 4, 1758 - Paris February 14, 1823), titled "Le Printemps dit Le Triomphe de Venus" (The Spring said the Triumph of Venus) that Prud'hon made for the decoration of the great salon of the Seasons of the Hotel Lannoy in Paris in 1800. See pictures. An engraving depicting that subject is now in the Petit Palais Musee des Beaux Arts in Paris. The procession is more than finely made, I'm amazed looking at all the perfect details which being carved into the stone are really harder to carve, Venus on her decorated chariot drawn by doves is masterly carved. Cupids are behind her, one holding a ribbon tied to her chariot and the other one keeps a small running dog. Another Cupid is on the chariot keeping the doves reins. A flying figure depicting the Spring spreads flowers to open the way to the Goddess chariot and two cherubs below her collect those fallen flowers. There is also the symbol of Psyche, a butterfly, flying above Venus. Look at the pictures and you'll see all the beauty of this intaglio. The gold frame is another beauty, elaborately worked and perforated gold. Another marvellous and rarest work of art. to not to miss.
