- Material: Lava, 15K gold tested .
- Size: just over 2 2/8" by just over 1 7/8" only cameo is 2" by 1 5/8".
- Date and Origin: Circa 1850/1860 Italy, frame could be English.
- Conditions: I must mention that the brooch has been restored, you can see the work done just at the top of her head starting from the first leaf until the bunch grape. I found it as is so I can't know why the restoring was done, my opinion is that it was done because the leaf was chipped or perhaps for a crack line. The work has been done very carefully and looking at the cameo in person it is not noticeable (remind that the pictures are very enlarged) because what catches the eye is the beauty of the carving and its all highest quality details surely fruit of the skill of a great master carver. I could not let her went away because I had never seen a lava bacchante so wonderfully carved.
- Original fitted case.
More than Museum Quality and huge cameo depicting a Bacchante. They were followers of Bacchus the God of wine (Dionysus is the Greek name). Bunches of grapes and wine leaves in her hair. Look how the carver used the stone to evidence her face, the wine leaves and the grapes and the clothes. This subject really jumps out from the stone, everything is so realistic, the leaves and the bunch of grapes appear just to be put like a cascade on her hair, this cameo seems just like a sculpture. This is one of most beautiful Bacchante I have ever seen, the pictures speak by themselves. The frame is spectacular too, so elaborate and wonderful. This is another masterly carved cameo. This one has a ridiculous price, just because of the restoration done even if, I repeat, it is not noticeable. A very desirable collectors piece, rare and museum quality cameo.
